TEA designed the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) to assess the progress that limited English proficient (LEP) students make in learning the English language.

TELPAS Parent Brochures

To assist districts with the task of helping parents understand their child's TELPAS test results, the Student Assessment Division has developed a PDF brochure entitled "Understanding the Confidential Student Report - A Guide for Parents." This brochure has three purposes:

  1. To give you some basic information about TELPAS,
  2. To explain a sample test report so that you can understand your child’s actual test report,
  3. To provide you with a short summary of each proficiency rating so that you will better understand the progress your child is making in learning English.

Writing Proficiency Level Descriptors

The purpose of this Proficiency Level Descriptors 1 for English Language Proficiency Standards document is to complement, rather than replace, the ELP Standards. This document provides summary definitions and more detailed descriptions of what ELLs’ language forms2 might look like as ELLs gain proficiency with the strategic set of language functions3 outlined in the ELP Standards. Following a glossary of key terms, the document concludes with an appendix that provides background information about the contexts in which the PLDs are situated.

System (TELPAS), an assessment program for English language learners (ELLs). This guide
provides an overview of TELPAS and serves to support effective implementation of the Texas
English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS).

Make sure to read your TELPAS rater manual. This PowerPoint also includes student released samples which are necessary to include in your preparation.
